Overview

The majestic Nuptse, standing at 7,864 meters (25,801 ft), rises as the western sentinel of Everest and Lhotse. Its name, derived from the Sherpa language — where Nup means “west” and Tse means “peak” — reflects its geographic position. Nuptse proudly shares the grandeur of the Everest massif and forms the southern boundary of the famous Western Cwm. Linked to Lhotse via Tenzing Peak on the eastern ridge, Nuptse’s prominent spurs reach down toward Everest Base Camp and the Khumbu Icefall. From viewpoints like Kalapatthar, Nuptse looms as a towering wall guarding the gateway to Everest. Its summit ridge consists of seven distinct sub-peaks, all soaring above 7,500 meters.

At 7,864 meters, Nuptse ranks among the tallest and most formidable peaks in the 7,000-meter category. The climb is widely recognized as one of the most technically demanding, with the main route along the steep north face above the Western Cwm posing a significant challenge even for experienced climbers. Nuptse was first summited on May 16, 1961, by British climber Dennis Davis and Nepali climber Sherpa Tashi via the North Ridge, also known as the Scott Route.

Reaching the summit of Nuptse is an extreme test, with high risks from fierce winds and precarious cornices along its razor-sharp summit ridge. The mountain’s sheer vertical walls and exposed ridgelines demand excellent technical skill and endurance.

GoldenGate Tours and Travel’s Nuptse Expedition kicks off in mid-April from Kathmandu. The first days are dedicated to finalizing gear, equipment, and expedition permits. From Kathmandu, the team flies to Lukla, marking the start of the trek to base camp — an approximately seven-day journey on foot. This expedition is ideal for climbers who have previously tackled 6,000-meter peaks or higher. The route ascends through the notorious Khumbu Icefall to Camp 1, located above the Icefall and surrounded by deep crevasses. From there, the team progresses along the lateral moraine to Camp 2, which serves as the main hub for the Everest peaks. The final push from Camp 2 leads to the north face of Nuptse, advancing up the central spur to the summit.
